Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

Eligibility Guide - 2009

Thank you for your interest. There are eligibility guidelines for participation in the SYEP program.

Age

To be eligible, you must be at least age 14 and no older than age 24, both by June 1, 2009.

I. Income Guidelines

Depending on the size of your family, your income must fall within the provided income levels*:

Examples of documentation proving income (if not included in exception list below):

  • Pay stubs from working parents
  • Proof of SSI or SSDI payments
  • Unemployment wage statement

*Listed below are a few exceptions that automatically qualify youth for the income eligibility:

  • If your family receives food stamps or welfare benefits (TAFDC)
  • Youth is a foster child
  • Youth lives in a homeless shelter
  • Youth in DYS or DSS custody (not living in parental home)
  • Verification of physical or mental disability

Any of the above must be verified with appropriate documents.

 
II. Barriers

Youth found income eligible must be in at least one of the following categories:

  • Deficient in Basic Skills - testing by school or disability documentation (form in file to be filled out by your high school)
  • High School Dropout - withdrawal forms can be obtained from your high school
  • Homeless, Runaway, or Foster Child - DSS letter, documentation from shelter or person providing temporary shelter
  • Pregnant or Parenting - birth certificate for each child
  • Offender - DYS letter, letter from probation officer, court papers
  • Requires Additional Assistance to Complete an Educational Program - Test scores at least one grade level below or disability documentation

Proof of barriers must be documented.

III. Documents

All youths must provide copies of the following:

  • Birth certificate or US passport
  • If not born in United States: Green card or work authorization papers
  • Social security card
  • Completed work permit: ages 14-17
  • Males 18 years old must register for selective service

Additional forms, listed below, are also required and will be provided by The Career Place for you to fill out:

  • Applicant statement to prove family size
  • W4, for tax purposes
  • I-9, for payroll purposes
